How French levels work: A1 to C2 explained
French proficiency is measured on the Common European Framework (CEFR) across six levels: A1, A2 (basic user), B1, B2 (independent user), C1, C2 (proficient user). For most learners, B1 and B2 are the key targets — B1 covers travel and everyday work situations, while B2 is the most valuable level for jobs and studying in France, and the most popular level for the DELF exam.
How accurate is this test?
This test gives you a fast, useful estimate — enough to point you in the right direction. But real fluency is more than grammar and vocabulary: listening comprehension, speaking confidence, and how you handle real conversations all matter too, and no online quiz can measure those. To find out your actual level and get a study plan built around your goals, the best next step is a trial class with a native tutor.
Who’s behind this test?
This test was built by Aurélie, a native French tutor with over 5,000 hours of teaching experience and a 4.99/5 rating from 1,440+ students on AmazingTalker. She’s helped learners at every level — from complete beginners to those polishing their French for the DELF or DALF — figure out exactly where they stand and what to work on next.
